Guidelines in Progress

  • Alcohol and Substance Use Screening and Brief Intervention* (Summer 2008)
  • Preventive Health Care (Summer 2008)

*Alcohol and Substance Use Screening and Brief Intervention: CCGC is developing an alcohol and substance use screening and brief intervention guideline for primary care providers in Colorado.  The State of Colorado was awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to develop and implement screening, brief intervention, referral, and treatment (SBIRT) as a routine procedure within health service delivery systems.  SBIRT is designed to target people with non-dependent use and to provide effective strategies for intervention prior to the need for more intensive treatment.  It emphasizes universal screening and very brief interventions for patients identified as needing some level of treatment for risky use of alcohol and other substances.  Currently, the SBIRT program is being implemented in hospitals and public health clinics throughout the state.  CCGC plans to increase awareness and use of SBIRT in private primary care settings.  To learn more about SBIRT Colorado, go to www.improvinghealthcolorado.org.

SBIRT Webcast: Enhancing Treatment with the Non-Dependent User

Colorado Clinical Guidelines Collaborative (CCGC) is pleased to announce Session Two of the three part SBIRT webcast series, Brief Intervention and Brief Therapy: Enhancing Treatment with the Non-Dependent User presented by Anjali Nandi, MA, LAC, MAC, Program Director at the Center for Change in Boulder, CO, and Tracey Ayers, LPC, CAC III, Co-Owner of the Brief Therapy Institute in Denver, CO.  This event is supported by funding from SBIRT Colorado.

Date:  Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Time: 11:30am – 1:00pm Mountain Time

Target Audience:

Primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, medical assistants, clinic support staff, and interested healthcare professionals

Description:

This presentation is the second in a three-part series addressing the use of Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treat (SBIRT) in healthcare settings.  This session will highlight the brief intervention and brief therapy components of the SBIRT approach to screening patients for alcohol and substance use and connecting patients with risky levels of use to appropriate services.  Brief intervention is a proven method of helping patients build awareness and resolve ambivalence about substance use and brief therapy focuses on assisting patients with achieving specific short-term goals and building skills to eliminate harmful or debilitating behaviors.  Healthcare providers can improve the quality of care delivered by offering and connecting patients to these services.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding the continuum of care for the non-dependent, high-risk substance user including the components of a brief conversation
  • Assessing and enhancing motivation for change and determine appropriate referral for patient
  • Examining the construct of brief therapy and what patients can expect from a brief therapy referral
  • Identifying opportunities for coordinating patient care including treatment referrals and patient follow through
  • Addressing perceived barriers to implementing screening and brief intervention including time, reimbursement and available specialty care

Handouts of related materials will be emailed to all registered participants the day before the event.  The third event of this series will be held in October (more details coming soon).
