Title: The 5 R’s for Smoking Cessation: Helping the Smoker Who is Not Ready to Quit
Speaker: Heather LaChance, PhD, LMFT, Assistant Professor of Medicine at National Jewish Medical and Research Center
Date: Tuesday, August 5, 2008
Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM MSTThis session will focus on the “5 R’s” for smoking cessation: Relevance, Risks, Rewards, Roadblocks and Repetition – steps designed to motivate smokers who are unwilling, unmotivated or not ready to quit. This presentation builds upon previous sessions for healthcare providers who are already implementing the 5 A’s – Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist and Arrange – the basic steps providers follow in addressing smoking with patients. This next level of training – the 5 R’s – includes motivational intervention techniques that help providers effectively intervene with resistant-to-quitting smokers. Case examples will be used to illustrate concepts.

Unified Health Communication 101:
Addressing Health Literacy, Cultural Competency, and Limited English Proficiency
The federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has created an online training tool designed to help providers better communicate with patients, AHA News Now reports. The tool was developed by HRSA's Center for Quality, Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, and Office of Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights in collaboration with representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice. The resource teaches providers to assess and respond to patients' health literacy, cultural background and language skills. The approximately five-hour self-paced course includes five modules. The first four sections provide an overview of health communication, health literacy, cultural competency and limited English proficiency. The fifth module tests the efficacy of participants' communications skills, challenging them to apply the information learned in the previous modules. According to an HRSA release, participants will be able to earn continuing education credits from agencies including the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the American Association for Health Education (AHA News Now, 11/26/07; HRSA release, 11/21/07).
